Frequently Asked Questions - Dial up

Questions and answers relating to Access 1 dial up services.

V.92 modem technology allows the user to pause the internet connection and receive an incoming call. The amount of time you can place your Internet connection on hold while taking another call is 3.5 minutes. Your V.92 modem may include software that will warn you when the timeout time approaches, as well as to display call-waiting and caller-id info (requires call-waiting/caller-id service with your phone company).

You want to use local access numbers to avoid paying long distance charges. If an access number is in your local calling area, a modem will connect at a local call rate, just as if you were dialing the number via a phone.

The only way to be absolutely certain that an ISP access number is local to you is to contact your telephone service provider. Give them the access number and they will tell you if that number is included in your local calling plan or not.

The term V.92 relates to the new modem technology. Older modems are V.90, and can only connect at speeds up to 56 kilobits. With a V.92 modem, and a V.92 access number, you can connect to the Internet at speeds 200% faster than an older, V90 modem. Note that a V.92 modem does not have to use only V.92 access numbers.
